While watching Elastic Youth’s ‘Interpreting the Scrunchie’, I was amazed to learn that such an obvious object could be patented. The controversial scrunchie was first patented in 1987 under the brand name “scünci”, named after inventress Rommy Revson’s toy poodle.

Google offers a patent search, which offers an insight into thousands of patents, many accompanied with quirky diagrams. Below shows the 'Method of concealing partial baldness' using only the hair on a person's head, 'invented' by Donald and Frank Smith.

Browsing through patents, it's facinating to see how certain products have evolved over the years, notably, the humble paperclip.

The modern paper clip (636,272) was patented in 1899 to William D. Middlebrook of Connecticut but prior to this invention were many attempts to create a simple paper fastening device. Below are a few personal highlights:

For many months now, Nest Gallery has been working with The Sisters Burn to put together 'They Is Us', a show dealing with a female response to the themes brought up by the science fiction genre. Eight artists deal with visions of the future and prophecies of the past.

Micro workshop session
Brief: Create an alternative to the existing 2010 Olympic mascots (Wenlock and Mandeville).
Create something iconic that celebrates British culture, creativity and heritage.

1) Write down two words that will describe your mascot characteristics e.g (agility, long legs)
2) In pairs, taking the two words you've chosen between you, eliminate two of them leaving just two words between you
3) Draw your mascot or create your mascot using model making materials
4) Introduce your creation to the rest of the group, explaining the design decisions you made.

Next week I will be giving a 30 minute, hands-on workshop Exploring Basic 3-D Structures in Urban Environments as part of my teaching course at Camberwell College.

In preparation, I have been looking at Peter Skillman's Marshmallow challenge, John Lloyd Wright's wooden Wright Blocks and unusual concrete masonry units.

Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lloyd Wright's father, experimented with constructing textile block houses in the 1920s. The textile blocks were designed to sit on top of one another, without visible mortar joints. Instead, thin concrete and steel rods were run horizontally and vertically 'knitting' the whole structure together. The patterns, made from wood castings could be rotated to make different designs for external and internal use.

LOOM Studio's 12 blocks are a modern version of the 1920s textile block. They are designed to bind with the industry standard breeze block. Similarly to F L Wright's blocks, different patterns can be produced depending on the way individual blocks are positioned.

ASHES AND MILK

Ashes and Milk is a collection of artists and craft makers 'founded on the principle that a lot can be created from very little.' Each piece of work is made by hand using natural materials. The images below show wood relief prints by Bryan Nash Gill.

Below is a prototype by Nicolas Cheng. Each piece of wood, once hollowed, will eventually hold the same 150ml volume, playing with how volume is perceived.

The screen printed panels for the playhouse are designed to encourage creative play and are deliberately left open to the interpretation of the nursery children. For example, the porthole designs remove the playhouse from any domestic theme and could potentially allow the space to be interpreted as a boat, spaceship, aeroplane or even submarine.

The internal control centre design presents basic alphabet and number sequences with various printed switches and buttons. The idea is that children will be able to interact with the designs and, if they wish, change the playhouse ‘function’. The control centre design could be perceived as a microwave, stereo or recording studio; it encourages creativity and an affinity with technology in a non-gendered format. I've been commissioned by Muf to improve a playhouse frame for a nursery in Stockwell. The outside porthole design transforms the playhouse into a submarine or aircraft. The inside designs show a control centre which will enable children to create new games using the prints which include basic number and alphabet sequences. The designs will be screen-printed onto wooden panels.

I went to the Duke Press Launch the other night. One of the illustrators featured was Ryan Todd who was selling a beautiful Risograph-printed publication titled 'Another Way' which is full of playful visual quips:

THE BISCUIT FACTORY

The biscuit Factory in Bermondsey opened in 1866 was the first ever mass producer of biscuits. It was also the birthplace of the Garibaldi (1861), the mighty Bourbon (1910) and in the 30s the controversial Twiglet.

During the 70s it produced 31 million tonnes of biscuits a year! The factory closed in the late 80s, but has recently seen a revamp by AHMM Architects and is now used for exhibition, studio and office space. There's a really great cafe there with lots of celeb snaps with the manager on the walls. (I think there is a recording studio next door.) I was sitting by some american woman I recognised off the telly.

PICTURE DISCS

The Cars' 'Just What I Needed' picture disc is the best picture disc I've come across so far. (There's an added bonus of having my name subtlety written in the design...you might have to squint!)

Just as coloured vinyl was introduced to help buyers differentiate between genres, picture discs were introduced to help boost sales.

Picture discs first appeared in the 1930s, when various materials were experimented with to encourage people to buy more records. Early picture discs had a very poor quality to them as film was placed over a thick paper print and then pressed with the grooves. (Hitler even released a 7" picture disc of this type with one of his speeches on.)

I have recently discovered Hard Format. It's definitely worth viewing if you have a love for music-related design. There are some great Peter Saville art works which I recommend looking at.

A couple of Months ago I went to see Jeremy Deller's 'The Posters Came From the Walls' documentary about Depeche Mode fans. After watching it I thought it was 'alright', but two months on, it's made a bigger impact on me than I thought it would. It's showing again at the Clapham Picture House and I'm tempted to go again. Designed by the great Peter Saville. There's an interesting documentary I saw a while back about the camouflage design... A follow up post perhaps.

The album artwork was inspired by Edward Wadsworth's Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool (1919 ). The disjointed lines are designed to confuse enemy ships as it distorts the ship's distance and size.

This album was a new direction for OMD and many of the featured songs are pretty experimental. The band used shortwave recordings to explore Cold War and Eastern Bloc themes. I found this vinyl a while back while rummaging through some charity shops on Walworth Road- it only cost me 50p. I found Architecture & Morality on a separate occasion in the same shop. I imagine some OMD fan is slowly reducing their record collection week by week.
My favourite song on the album, and probably one of all time favourite songs, well, in my top 50 is Telegraph:

Railings and Handrails- more prints

After the initial one-off print for a friend, I have decided to create an edition of six for the PRINT NOW open submission.

Railings and Handrails is a two-layered screen print onto paper. The print is both a compilation and interpretation of authentic street furniture from the city of London, and part of a larger study of historic, architectural sites, showing their development through time. The work is essentially ambiguous since there are no steps and the handrails offer no clear route. This reflects the disconnected and conflicted experience of life in the metropolis. There are six prints in this edition, all uniquely coloured.

Depeche Mode fans and brass bands...

The Posters Came from the Walls is an alright documentary by Jeremy Deller and Nick Abrahams about the impact Depeche Mode has had on fans around the world. Basildon's finest struck a unique chord with people from America, East Berlin, Iran and Russia, joined by their love of the band.

The film touches on the social changes happening around the world in the late 80s and shows how Depeche Mode songs constituted a global sound track to these historic moments, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Personal highlights include Goths holding church services in Cambridge featuring DM songs, and the risks fans in Tehran took to get hold of illegal DM tapes as Iran had banned all Western music after the Cultural Revolution.

The film has enraged many DM fans as it portrays them as weird, socially retarded outsiders who nurse an unhealthy obsession with Martin Gore.

The film will probably be out on DVD by the end of the year and I recommend watching it purely as a freak show and for the American High School brass band scene, when students create a D = M formation while continuing to play their cover of Personal Jesus.

I have scoured the Youtube for this scene, but all I could find was a Never Let Me Down cover:

I've been looking at the work of German Artist, Gerd Jansen.
His fascination with physics, mathematics and later, sculpture lead him to create controlled, visual puzzles.

Researching online using Google translator seems to conjure up interesting interpretations of Jansen's work:

'Festivities are the result of natural numbers and the structure-forming nature of some of these numbers to be prime. Free is what counts, and where and how the eye is presented.' - I think I get the jist.

Anyway, I have used Jansen's sculptures as a starting point for a new print.
